Collaboration with pianist Ralph van Raat

In the unique programma entitled Hammer Music, Slagwerk Den Haag and pianist Ralph van Raat examine the identity of the pianist and the percussionist. As far as we know, this is the first time this is being done since John Cage wrote his Prepared Piano Works.

‘Pi-a-no; large keyboard musical instrument with [...] metal strings, which are struck by hammers when the keys are depressed' (Oxford dictionary)

You wouldn't think it, but the piano and percussion actually have a lot in common. The strings in a piano are struck by a felt hammer. Finding himself without percussion, as an emergency measure the famous composer John Cage exploited this fact by modifying a piano to search for new sounds. The world of piano hammers would never be the same again.

Slagwerk Den Haag and Ralph van Raat add new perspectives on the percussive side of the piano, with existing compositions by Cage, Lachenmann and Rzewski and others, as well as new work by composers such as Mayke Nas. The endless possibilities will not fail to amaze the audience. What happens, for example, if you disconnect the strings from the keyboard and connect them to another source of sound?
